Description

Anti-embolism stockings (also TED stockings) are medical garments that provide graduated compression to the legs, from tightest at the ankle to loosest at the top, to improve blood flow and prevent dangerous blood clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT), especially for bedridden or post-surgery patients with limited mobility. They are typically made of elastic fabric, often feature a foot inspection hole, and work by gently squeezing veins to keep blood moving, reducing clot risk.
Key Features & How They Work:
  • Graduated Compression: The strongest pressure is at the ankle, gradually decreasing up the leg, which helps push blood from the extremities back towards the heart.
  • Purpose: To prevent blood pooling in the leg veins during periods of inactivity (like surgery recovery or long bed rest).
  • Material: Soft, stretchy, elastic fabric, often polyamide and elastane.
  • Design: Often knee-high or thigh-high, with a small inspection hole (toe opening) for checking circulation and skin integrity.
  • Pressure: Measured in mmHg (millimeters of mercury), commonly around 18-21 mmHg for standard use.
