Description of the Mediplus Cuff and Bladder
The device works similarly to a blood pressure cuff, but is specifically designed for diagnosing bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) without invasive procedures.
Function: The cuff with an internal inflatable bladder is placed around the penis before the patient voids urine into a flow meter.
Mechanism: As the patient voids, the cuff is automatically and repeatedly inflated and deflated to momentarily interrupt the urine flow. The pressure needed in the cuff’s bladder to stop the flow provides a measure of the internal bladder pressure.
Purpose: By combining the cuff pressure data with the urine flow rate, the system can determine the relationship between bladder pressure and flow, allowing clinicians to accurately diagnose voiding problems such as an enlarged prostate (BPH) or a weak bladder muscle. This helps guide the appropriate treatment decisions, potentially reducing unnecessary invasive surgeries.
Design: The system uses a custom-made cuff inflation device linked to a PC for full automation. The cuff itself is a simple, easy-to-apply component.
